Lecture: Claimed for the Nation: Contemporary Artists and the National Gallery

Venue: Theatre 2, Peninsula Arts, Roland Levinsky Building, Plymouth University
Thursday 10 November from 7pm

Colin Wiggins is Special Projects Curator at the National Gallery, London. In the 19th Century, the National Gallery was founded with the aim of providing a resource for artists, and this tradition has continued to the present day, when it regularly invites contemporary artists to interact with and re-interpret the collection. Looking back over the many modern artists who have worked with the National Gallery, from Frank Auerbach and Paula Rego to, more recently, Tom Hunter  and Yinka Shonibare, Colin’s talk will consider whether there is such a thing as ‘British’ art, or even ‘Britishness’, that can be defined by anything other than geography..

This talk is part of Peninsula Arts’ ‘On Art, Heritage and Nationhood’ lecture series which celebrates ‘British Art Show 7: In the Days of the Comet’ coming to Plymouth and focuses on British art and culture of the modern period.

  • Tickets are £5 (£3 concessions, free for Friends of Peninsula Arts and Plymouth University students and staff)- to book please call 01752 585050 or visit the Peninsula Arts Box Office, Roland Levinsky Building between 1pm and 5pm Monday to Friday
